I have always loved to read. I remember getting a new book for christmas, and then reading it whole next day. My very favorite thing to do is wake up and stay in bed in with a good book for an hour or so. I haven’t been able to do this for a while since I have a sweet little thing that demands my early morning time. Brad took care of Leah on Mothers Day morning so I could indulge in this simply pleasure! Reading has alway been an escape for me. I love to open the pages of the book, and let my mind drift away. The stories fascinate me and I love being inspired by the imagination of others. Lately, I’ve enjoyed more than just the stories I find in a book, I’ve become interested in the actually writing. I love the plot lines, the character development, the use of words to convey feelings. I would love to think that one day I would be able to write as well as some of my favorite authors.
I find that while I’m reading a good book, I get totally immersed in that little world. I constantly think about the story well after I’m finished. I need an outlet to let out my thoughts on the book, and although Brad is a great listener when I need him, I know that he just doesn’t understand. “So, the alien and the girl became friends? Thats great honey.” “I agree Tahsha, its great that she’s in love with a vampire, not the ware-wolf.” I find him saying to me, “Tahsha, you need to let Harry go and pay attention to me!” Brad doesn’t enjoy any thing that has to do with fantasy. He says, “If there is any pointy ears in this movie, I won’t see it.” Fantasy is kind of my new thing, so this is one thing that we don’t have in common. So to save my wonderful husband from having to listen to my crazy thoughts on my crazy books, I’ve decided to use my blog to journal my thoughts on my latest reads. My blogs main purpose is as a journal for my family, so if you are interested on what I think about the books I’ve read, then enjoy my review, if you don’t, just skip over.
So the latest book that I've read is The Host, by one of my favorite authors, Stephenie Meyer. I was hesitant to read this book, Sci-Fi is not my thing, but Stephenie Meyer was on Good Things Utah, and she convinced me to pick it up! So, I would like to just take a moment to give my thoughts on the book.
Stephenie Meyer changed my views on vampires, (use to terrify me, and now I want to become one, and find a vampire husband) and likewise she changed my views on Aliens. I read somewhere that Stephenie said that The Host is "science fiction for people who don't like science fiction." And I totally agree.
I have always loved Stephenie Meyes writing, but as I got deeper into the Twilight series I found it a little (gasp) predictable. (Don't get me wrong, the Twilights are my all time favorite books ever.) I was totally expecting her to write her books similar to the way she wrote Twilight. I've noticed that the first 3/4ths of the book, are (still great) but kinda slow as far as the action goes and the last 1/4th is completely intense, and action packed! I think I would enjoy the books more (is it possible?) if the action was a little more spread out adding to the suspense. So, I totally expected The Host to follow the same pattern, but as I got deeper into the book, I found it totally different than her other writing, and I loved it!! Its wasn't action packed, or full of breath stealing romance, but more a thoughtful, deep look into the characters and their lives. Don't worry there still was some romance, just not the all consuming, passionate romance that comes with an Edward-like character. Stephenie is such a great writer, who else can write a "love triangle" between four people, three bodies, and six couples? It was a little crazy to keep track of what was going with who, but it was very interesting and exciting.
As far as the alien part goes, I really liked getting a look at our bodies, minds, emotions, and world through an outsiders point of view. When the aliens posses our bodies they are overwhelmed by the intensity and unpredictable nature of our emotions. The alien Wanderer was contemplating on how we could hate so much, and become so violent, yet we can love so passionately. She came to the conclusion that its the extremes in our natures that make our lives so rich and wonderful!
I hoped this book would take me through a few weeks, so I could read the Twilights again in preparation for Breaking Dawn (cheer!!!), but I zipped through the book in a week and a half! So, I loved the book, would totally recommend it! I really got into the characters and I hope that Stephenie's visions of a sequel or two will come to pass!!
