I cleaned the garage today.
It was in bad shape. I have an awesome garage with lots of storage, perfect for putting stuff away that you don’t want to ever see again.
I kept shaking my head, laughing at some of the crap that was in there. Keeping the garage clean was not one of Brad’s strong points. (You’re probably so grateful to know that I am aware that Brad had faults–there are few, but they exist.)
Every once in a while, I’d get overwhelmed with excited feelings of Brad seeing the clean garage and then tremendous let down when I remembered that that wouldn’t happen.
{Let’s stop right there.}
This is really what I want to talk about. Because that makes me sound totally insane right?
I’ve said stuff like this before and I have a hard time explaining what I mean. It really bugs me and I’m always worried that people are thinking, “Uh-oh, Tahsha’s lost it again.”
I’m not stupid, and I’m only a little crazy.
It’s not like I truly have those conscious thoughts. It’s not like for two whole minutes I’ve completely lost my mind and forgotten my reality.
They’re more like . . . Feelings. If I were to put words to the feelings I had while cleaning the garage they’d go like this:
I can’t wait to see the look on Brad’s face when he sees that I cleaned out the garage for him.
I’m so excited to surprise Brad.
Brad’s going to be so happy.
I better hurry so I have time to shower and dress up nice because Brad’s totally going to take me out to a nice dinner tonight.
I get these kind of feelings all the time.
I don’t want to cook dinner tonight. I wonder if Brad will mind if I get pizza.
I’d better call Brad and tell him I’ll be home a little late.
I need to see if Brad doesn’t mind if I go hang out with my friends.
I can’t wait for Brad to come home so I can tell him the funny things Leah did today.
I hope Brad will be home soon so he can make me feel better.
See, these are just feelings, natural instincts that have been ingrained in me for six years. Most of the time they’re small, almost unnoticeable. I’ll be busy, absorbed in work, life with Leah, or watching TV and these sneaky little feelings will catch me by surprise.
The pain comes when these feelings totally take over and for only a split second they actually do become a believable thought. Then reality crashes over me, sucker punches me in the guts and I can’t catch my breath.
It’s like the logical, stuck-in-reality part of me has to constantly tell the irrational denial-based part of me to shut up. The part that can’t get six years of routine out of my head. The part that still cannot believe that this is real. The part that’s still waiting for him to come through the door.
In the mean time, the garage is clean.
So that’s a good thing–a blessing I get to count.
It was hard work. I was covered in dirt, grease and dog hair (I know, sexy.) But it felt so good to cross that nagging project off my list. I’m still proud of myself when I go out and see the garage all clean.
I almost expect a little sparkle to beam at me.

Just last week I found myself thinking 'Nick will help me when he gets home.' You're not crazy! I don't know if that ever really goes away and honestly I don't know if I ever really want it to go away!
You know, Nick and I have talked about this before, If Nick passed away, I would have those feelings of needing to call him to tell him something funny my kids did...or to hear his car pull into the garage.... All those things your experiencing are absolutely normal and are part of the grieving process. I wish I could help ease your pain. I really hope you know that I am here to be your friend if you ever need anything. I completely admire your writtings and pray for you and Leah on this journey of yours.
Oh doll, it may surprise you to know that actually nobody thinks you are crazy for thinking that way! We all live our lives day to day and get into routines, things we are used to doing. Les told me she picked up her phone and started to dial Brad's number about a month or so ago...you aren't the only one! I saw an old email from Brad about an order I had placed a while back and of course after we discussed business it was the usual "How is your family doing, mines doing great" sort of conversation and for a split second I thought to myself "I haven't talked to him in forever. I should send him another email and see how things are going". You are adorable, I love you to pieces...both the "little bit crazy" and VERY normal pieces of you. Thanks for sharing all these wonderful stories/messages. I love them!
My Grandma actually suggested my Grandfather read a part at his own funeral. It is hard to change the thought process. I am so proud of you for doing the garage! That is amazing. Miss you. Come see me :)
First of all, you're definitely not crazy. I'd be more worried if those weren't your instinctive thoughts. I agree with all of your friends who've already commented. You are an amazing person and I love reading your blog.
I read a comment you made on my blog and appreciated it, so I followed the link. I liked reading your thoughts. There are few people that really can understand this new "club" we belong to, nor want to belong to, but it is good to read your thoughts and know well some of the things you are sharing. I know everyone's experiences are different and every individual gets through them in their own way, but I have had several of those moments when these feelings have come and it is tough to be anchored back to reality split seconds later. I have always thought I was a little crazy though, so that may not comfort you:)
Not that this has been easy for me by any means, but it breaks my heart to think of these rolls reversed if my wife and her tender way was the one left here and I passed...thinking of her going through this is hard, so I appreciate what you have to say. I like to think those are some of the moments they are permitted to hang with us...I don't know the rules. but thank you for your perspective.
I heard a truck outside the trailer this weekend. I looked out the window. The briefest fleeting thought (feeling) was, I wonder if it's Brad bringing the horses to camp like he had done many times before. I have those times too.
I thought allot about him this last trip. Hiked trails that we hiked together. Camped at the same camp as we had. Wondered if he had sweet rolls in Heaven. Brad always liked the sweet rolls that Susan sent up. He would eat two or three at a setting.
Again, maybe Brad is teaching us to Love and Adore those we have who are still with us.
Love,
Daddy
